Dwarf birch is a hardy, low-maintenance shrub perfect for Southern Ontario gardens. This compact plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and features fine texture with vibrant fall color. Highly cold-tolerant and well-suited for Zones 5–6, it prefers consistently moist, acidic soil and benefits from a 2–3 inch mulch layer to retain moisture and keep roots cool. Plant in spring or fall in a hole twice as wide as the root ball. Space 2–4 feet apart for massing or borders. Water deeply during the first growing season and during dry summers; once established, it becomes moderately drought-tolerant. Apply balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Minimal pruning needed—prune in late winter or early spring only if shaping is desired. Watch for birch leafminer and aphids. Ideal for rock gardens, small spaces, and containers.
