Cedar hedges are a classic choice for privacy and structure in Southwestern Ontario gardens. These evergreens thrive when planted in spring or early fall in well-draining, moist soil spaced 2–3 feet apart for a standard privacy screen. Success depends on consistent watering, especially during the first three years and through fall before winter. Water newly planted cedars daily for the first few weeks, then every 2–3 days for three months. Established trees need deep watering once weekly during dry spells. Fall watering is critical—continue until the ground freezes to prevent winter burn from drying winds. Fertilize in early spring and mid-season with a nitrogen-rich evergreen formula to support root establishment and vibrant foliage. Prune annually in summer (late June through mid-September), removing only one-third of new growth and never cutting into old wood. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to retain moisture. In late October, wrap young cedars in burlap to protect against needle browning and snow damage. Keep road salt away from roots, and monitor for common issues like drought stress, deer browsing, or pest damage. With proper care, cedars create a dense, attractive hedge that lasts for decades.
