Hick's Yew (Taxus x media 'Hicksii') is a low-maintenance evergreen shrub ideal for Southwestern Ontario gardens (Zone 4a-5b). Its dense, narrow, upright form makes it perfect for creating privacy hedges and screens. Remarkably versatile, it thrives in full sun to deep shade. Once established, Hick's Yew is drought-tolerant and requires minimal care. Water newly planted specimens deeply 1–2 times weekly during the first growing season. Ensure excellent drainage—yews are sensitive to waterlogged soil and root rot. Amend heavy clay with organic matter or plant in raised beds. Water well in late fall, especially during dry seasons. In exposed, windy areas, wrap with burlap to prevent winter burn. Apply balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Prune in early spring (March–April) or summer (June to mid-August). These shrubs handle severe rejuvenation pruning if they outgrow their space. Space plants 3–4 feet apart for a dense hedge.

⚠️ All parts of the yew except the red berry flesh are toxic to humans, dogs, cats, and horses. Keep away from children and pets.
