Lilacs are a classic choice for Southwestern Ontario gardens, thriving in full sun with 6+ hours of direct light daily. These hardy shrubs prefer well-drained, neutral-to-alkaline soil and require minimal care once established. Plant in early spring or autumn in a sunny location. Young plants need regular watering, but mature lilacs are drought-tolerant and only require water during extended dry spells. In spring, apply a layer of compost or manure—avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which reduce flowering. Prune immediately after blooming in late spring by removing dead, diseased, or crossing branches and thinning out the oldest third of canes to ground level. This promotes a fountain shape and encourages next year's blooms. For overgrown shrubs, rejuvenate gradually by cutting back one-third of the oldest stems each year over three years. Ensure good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew. Remove basal suckers throughout the season to keep the plant's shape controlled. With proper care, your lilac will reward you with fragrant, abundant flowers year after year.
