Weigela
Weigela is a versatile, low-maintenance flowering shrub perfect for South West Ontario gardens (Zones 5b–6b). Celebrated for vibrant spring blooms that attract hummingbirds and pollinators, it also offers colorful foliage throughout summer.
Plant in full sun (6+ hours) for best blooms and rich foliage color. Weigela adapts to most soils but prefers moist, well-draining conditions—avoid waterlogging. Space plants 4–6 feet apart and provide shelter from harsh winter winds in exposed areas.
Young plants need consistent moisture (about 1 inch weekly) to establish; once mature, they're moderately drought-tolerant. Apply balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring before growth begins. Prune immediately after spring flowering (late June/early July) to preserve next year's buds, as weigela blooms on old wood. Remove dead or crossing branches, and rejuvenate older shrubs by cutting one-third of the thickest stems to the ground.
In winter, apply 2–3 inches of organic mulch around the base to protect roots. Watch for rabbit damage on younger plants and use hardware cloth guards if needed. Don't be alarmed if your weigela is slow to leaf out in spring—this is normal.
