MISCANTHUS Zone 4-5
One of the showiest of the grasses. Large or short, it is grown for its vertical or mounding habit and showy, fluffy flower panicles that are so striking in late summer and fall. Fond of moist sites. Miscanthus is versatile from a design standpoint; it can be used as a specimen, for massing or screening, in large containers, or at the pond's edge. Plant this grass where its wonderful winter interest can be enjoyed.
Giganteus (Giant Silver Grass) This is a grass of monstrous proportions, forming very tall clumps of green leaves, their tips arching gracefully in layers. Useful as a living screen or hedge, bearing soft-pink plumes in the fall. The corn-like stalks turn creamy tan in winter. Lower leaves have a tendency to wither in late summer, so planting something tall in front is recommended. Plants require plenty of moisture, and are even happy growing beside water. Little Zebra (Dwarf Zebra grass) Like ‘Zebrinus’ but shorter and more upright. Reddish-purple plumes turn to creamy tan in winter. Red to tan Gold/green August 3-4ft high 24” spread
Little Zebra Maiden Grass Miscanthus sinensis 'Little Zebra' PP13008 Tidy compact ornamental grass with alternating green and yellow horizontal bands on the leaves. Reddish-purple plumes are held above the foliage in late summer and are excellent for cut or dried arrangements. Asexual propagation prohibited.
Maiden Grass A graceful, elegant looking, arching grass with narrow leaves with a silvery midrib. Feathery, finely textured red-copper plumes turn silver-white colour in fall. Use as a specimen, background plant or screen and make good cut or dried flowers.
Porcupine Clumping, ornamental grass has an erect habit and bright yellow variegated horizontal bands on its leaves. Copper-coloured flowers bloom in fall, drying to a fluffy tan. Foliage turns straw-coloured with the first frost. Dramatic effect as a garden accent, around ponds and pools.
Zebrinus Has large coppery flowers over an arching clump of green leaves, uniquely banded with yellow. The foliage dries and turns a light tan shade for the winter. Copper Green/gold September 7-8ft high 30” spread
