Japanese Maple Tree
Japanese Maple trees bring elegant, delicate foliage to Ontario gardens and thrive in Zone 5b-6b with proper care. Plant in a sheltered location with dappled sunlight or partial shade (4-6 hours daily), protected from harsh northwest winter winds and hot afternoon sun. They prefer rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil—amend heavy clay with compost or use a raised bed.
Young trees need consistent moisture every 1-3 days; established trees require watering during dry spells to prevent leaf scorch. Apply 2-3 inches of organic mulch to retain moisture and keep roots cool, keeping it away from the trunk. Use balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring, avoiding high-nitrogen products.
In the first 1-3 years, protect trees from desiccating winter winds with a burlap screen (3-4 sided, not tightly wrapped). Water thoroughly in late autumn and ensure roots are well-mulched before the ground freezes. Prune in late winter or early spring before bud break to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and enhance natural form.
Watch for leaf scorch, verticillium wilt, and common pests like aphids or mites. With attentive care, your Japanese Maple will develop into a stunning focal point for years to come.
