Roses thrive in Southwestern Ontario with full sun (6+ hours daily) and well-drained soil enriched with compost. Plant with the graft union 5 cm below soil surface for enhanced winter hardiness.

Water consistently at 1–3 inches weekly. Select hardy varieties such as Canadian Shield or Explorer series for reliable winter survival. Fertilize every 2–3 weeks during the growing season, stopping mid-August. With attentive seasonal care, your roses will bloom beautifully year after year.

Spring (April–May): Remove winter-damaged canes, leaving 3–4 strong, healthy stems. Prune to outward-facing buds to open the center for air circulation. Strip away winter protection as frost risk subsides. Begin balanced rose fertilizer applications with new growth.

Summer (June–August): Water at the base to prevent leaf wetness and disease like black spot. Deadhead spent blooms regularly, cutting to the first five-leaflet stem to sustain flowering. Watch for aphids and powdery mildew; treat with organic or sulfur-based products. Cease fertilizing by mid-August to prevent tender new growth vulnerable to winter frost.

Fall & Winter (October–November): Rake fallen leaves to minimize disease. Reduce cane height to prevent wind rock. Once hard frosts arrive, mound 8–10 inches of soil and mulch around the base to shield the bud union.
