Hardy honeysuckle vines bring fragrant, hummingbird-attracting blooms to Southwestern Ontario gardens. Plant in full sun to partial shade with moist, well-drained soil amended with compost. Space 5–10 feet apart and provide sturdy support. Water weekly during establishment; once mature, they're drought-tolerant but need water during dry spells. Apply spring mulch to cool roots and retain moisture. Fertilize sparingly in spring with slow-release formula—excess nitrogen promotes foliage over flowers. Prune early-flowering varieties after bloom; late-flowering types in early spring. Watch for aphids and powdery mildew; spray with water or insecticidal soap and ensure good air circulation. In Zone 5b–6b winters, add mulch for root protection and remove diseased foliage. Move potted plants to a sheltered, unheated space or wrap containers. Prune dead or damaged branches in early spring.
