Buddleia (Butterfly Bush) is a fast-growing, sun-loving shrub perfect for Southwestern Ontario gardens. This herbaceous perennial dies back each winter and regrows vigorously in spring, producing abundant summer blooms on new wood.

**Growing Requirements** Plant in full sun (6–8 hours daily) with well-drained soil. Buddleia thrives in sandy or rocky conditions and is sensitive to winter rot—avoid wet, heavy clay without proper drainage. If you have clay soil, plant slightly elevated to encourage water runoff.

**Spring & Summer Care** Prune hard in early spring once green buds appear at the base, cutting back to 12–18 inches. This ensures bushy growth and flowers at eye level. Buddleia wakes late—growth may not appear until June, so be patient. Water weekly during dry spells. Deadhead spent flowers throughout summer to encourage continuous blooms and prevent invasive self-seeding. Fertilizer is rarely needed.

**Winter Protection** Apply 2–4 inches of mulch in late fall to insulate roots. Avoid severe pruning in fall; wait until spring. Keep plants away from areas where snow and ice melt accumulate. Established plants are drought-tolerant and low-maintenance once established, making them an excellent choice for gardeners seeking reliable summer color.
