Hardy shrubs and groundcovers perfect for Southwestern Ontario gardens. Euonymus varieties offer year-round appeal—choose evergreen types like Emerald 'n' Gold for consistent foliage, or Burning Bush for stunning crimson fall color. Plant in full sun to partial shade (full sun brings out the richest reds) in well-drained soil. Water deeply during the first year, especially in fall, to establish a strong root system before winter. Once settled, they're remarkably drought-tolerant. Winter success in Zones 5–6 depends on late-season care. Water again in early November, and protect evergreen varieties from leaf scorch with burlap wraps in exposed, windy spots. Deer and rabbits browse Euonymus in winter—use chicken wire barriers if needed. Prune in late winter or early spring (February–March). These shrubs handle hard pruning well and can be cut back to 6–12 inches to rejuvenate older plants. Apply slow-release fertilizer in spring to fuel new growth. A reliable, low-maintenance choice for mixed borders, hedges, and ground-level plantings across the region.
