Forsythia
Forsythia is a hardy, fast-growing shrub perfect for South Western Ontario gardens (USDA Zones 5-6). It bursts into bloom in early spring with vibrant yellow flowers and requires minimal maintenance once established. Drought-tolerant and adaptable to most soils, Forsythia thrives in full sun to partial shade.
Plant in early fall or spring in well-draining soil with at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. Space plants 3 to 10 feet apart as they can reach 10 feet tall and wide. Water regularly when newly planted; established shrubs need deep watering only during dry spells. Little to no fertilizer is needed—avoid excess nitrogen, which promotes foliage over flowers.
The key to abundant blooms is proper pruning. Prune immediately after flowering fades in late April or early May by removing 1/4 to 1/3 of the oldest stems at ground level. Never prune in fall or winter, as this removes next year's flower buds. Avoid electric hedge trimmers to maintain a natural shape and maximize flowering.
