Inkerberry Holly is a hardy, native evergreen shrub prized for its glossy dark foliage and abundant black berries that persist through winter, providing food for birds and striking visual interest in the landscape. In Southwestern Ontario, Inkerberry thrives in full sun to partial shade (6+ hours of sunlight encourages best berry production) and prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Plant in a location with good air circulation to minimize winter desiccation risk. Water deeply during the first growing season and throughout establishment. In late autumn, water thoroughly before the ground freezes to protect roots from winter drying. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch to insulate the root zone. For exposed sites, consider a windbreak to prevent leaf burn from cold, dry winds. Feed with a slow-release, acid-loving fertilizer in early spring. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and remove dead wood just before new growth emerges.

Note: Ilex are dioecious—you'll need both male and female plants for berry production. One male plant can pollinate 5–10 female plants, provided they bloom simultaneously.
