Delphiniums are the stars of the early summer border, forming a low mound of deeply-cut green leaves and bearing tall spikes of satiny, deep-blue flowers. Strong stems make them excellent for cutting arrangements. Removing faded spikes at the base encourages repeat blooming in fall. In hot, humid climates, plants typically last 2–3 years. Mildew may appear mid-summer; cut back hard to refresh foliage. Apply high-phosphorous fertilizer in early spring each year.
