Magnolia
Magnolia trees bring elegant, fragrant blooms to SW Ontario gardens when given the right conditions. Plant in a sunny, sheltered location with well-drained, slightly acidic soil to protect buds from late frost and winter wind damage. Water deeply once or twice weekly during the first two years to establish a strong root system, then maintain consistent moisture. Apply a wide mulch ring to protect shallow roots and regulate soil temperature. Minimal pruning is best—remove only broken or crossing branches immediately after flowering to preserve next year's buds. Watch for magnolia scale and treat with dormant oil spray if needed. With proper placement and care, your magnolia will reward you with years of stunning spring color.
