Scotch Broom - Cytisus
Scotch Broom is a hardy, low-maintenance shrub perfectly suited to Southwestern Ontario gardens. Thriving in USDA Zones 5–8, this nitrogen-fixing plant excels in sunny, dry locations with poor, well-drained soil—making it ideal for sandy or acidic beds where other plants struggle.
Plant in full sun (minimum 6 hours daily) and ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Water regularly during the first year to establish, then enjoy drought tolerance as the plant matures. No fertilizer needed—Cytisus naturally fixes nitrogen in the soil.
Prune annually right after flowering in late spring or summer, cutting flowered stems back by about one-third. Deadhead spent blooms to redirect energy into growth. With proper care, Scotch Broom typically lives 10–15 years, sometimes longer. In SW Ontario winters, no special protection is required; simply avoid planting in areas where water collects seasonally.
