Spirea
Spirea is an exceptionally hardy, low-maintenance deciduous shrub perfect for Southwest Ontario gardens (Zones 4–8). Once established, these drought-tolerant plants thrive in full sun and adapt to most soil types, making them ideal for mass plantings, hedges, or containers.
Plant in early spring or fall in well-draining soil with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Water newly planted shrubs regularly; mature plants need water only when soil dries out. Space 2–15 feet apart depending on variety.
Pruning is key to abundant blooms. Summer-blooming varieties (Double Play, Goldflame, Little Princess) bloom on new wood—prune aggressively in late winter while dormant. Spring-blooming types (Bridal Wreath) bloom on old wood—prune right after flowering to preserve next year's buds. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage a second bloom cycle.
Spirea require minimal feeding—apply controlled-release fertilizer in early spring. Add 2–3 inches of mulch to retain moisture and protect roots. Generally pest-resistant, though occasional aphids or spider mites can be managed with water spray or insecticidal soap. For overgrown shrubs, rejuvenate by cutting oldest stems to ground level every 3–4 years.
