Viburnums are highly adaptable, hardy shrubs perfect for Southwestern Ontario gardens (Zones 5b–6b). These low-maintenance plants deliver multi-season interest with spring flowers, summer and fall berries, and vibrant autumn foliage. Plant in full sun to part shade (6+ hours of sun yields best blooms and berries) in moist, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.6–6.6). Space 4–10 feet apart depending on mature size. Spring and fall are ideal planting times. Water newly planted viburnums weekly for the first 1–2 years. Once established, they're drought-tolerant but benefit from watering during hot, dry summers. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it away from the stem. Prune immediately after flowering—viburnums bloom on old wood, so fall or winter pruning removes next spring's flowers. Little maintenance is needed, though thinning older wood every 3–4 years rejuvenates the plant. Remove broken, dead, or diseased branches anytime.
