In SW Ontario (Zones 5–6), it thrives in full sun with south or west exposure and requires sturdy support—a steel trellis or robust pergola is essential. Plant in moist, well-drained soil and water regularly during the first year; once established, it becomes relatively drought-tolerant. Prune twice yearly: in late winter (cut back to 2–3 buds to stimulate flowering) and summer (trim long shoots to manage size). Use high-phosphorus, low-nitrogen fertilizer to encourage blooms rather than leafy growth.
